“1984” is a dystopian novel by George Orwell, published in 1949. It is set in Airstrip One a province of the superstate Oceania in a world of perpetual war, omnipresent government surveillance, and public manipulation. The novel is famous for its portrayal of pervasive government surveillance and totalitarian rule, and it has introduced many concepts and terms into the English language, such as “Big Brother,” “Thought Police,” “Room 101,” “memory hole,” “doublethink,” and “Newspeak.”
